If you need to calculate transfer functions, step responses, Bode diagrams, controllers etc. and use Octave (instead of MATLAB) you might be interested in an Octave Control Library (based on Octave Control Systems Toolbox.)
Please note, this library is work in progress. Currently only for the older 2.1.50 Octave version.
